For Better or for Worse : A Model Collapses
Research residency on Artificial Intelligence at Sporobole art center.
Based on a serial and procedural approach, a large set of images is produced using two main artificial intelligence tools: Stable Diffusion, an image generator that interprets textual prompts, and Deepseek-VL, a set of tools for image analysis. Scenes, real or imagined, are presented to the system. It analyzes and reproduces them, in successive waves, gradually revealing its limitations and inclinations. In the manner of xerox art, this technique allows the underlying “fabric” of such devices to emerge. The repeated transposition of a textual and visual image into falsely believed-to-be semantic spaces results in a reduction that sometimes goes as far as noise, underlining the statistical nature of these machines.
By taking a critical approach to the construction of images and text by these information technologies, and by investigating the computer mechanics at work, the aim of this research is to disenchant this “intelligence” in order to discover what it really is: a machine for processing signals.
